i think that the most successful improvs require (unfortunately) the most planning. Have some key material that you know you are comfortable with. Then, when the teacher puts you on the spot you will, for the first few times, be able to access some already thought out ideas. then, as you become more comfortable with expressing yourself, stop planning so much. By then you will have gotten the hang of on the spot comfort and your old ideas can start leading into new ones.

I was in an improv group before. At first i was really uptight and nervous but then I realized everybody else felt the same way. Ligthen up. Tell yourself that it's OKAY to make an *** out of yourself. Seriously, do something...people may think it's hilarious. Once you ease up a bit you will have a great time. Enjoy and take it easy. You can do it.

Improv is made up on the spot so do whatever comes to your mind first.

Go as if it is real life. Pretend that you are actually having that conversation or are in that situation. Then it flows better. Just do whatever pops into your head first.

Listen and react off the others. NEVER and I mean NEVER negate what your partner is saying. If someone asks you where your cat is, don't say you don't have a cat! Go with it. You have to react as if it is true. Don't THINK so much. If you're busy trying to think of funny things to say, you're not listening to what IS going on around you. Acting is REacting. Work off of what you're given.

see an episode of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" and try to imagine yourself in the actors' shoes. think of how you'll react if you're required to perform then and there, and perform it. in front of the mirror might work, too. good luck!
