wool navy pea coat in the rain?

I am told that wool stinks then it becomes wet. I just received a Navy Pea Coat and live in a wet climate. Do I need to do something to the coat to make it waterproof and not stink when wet?

Absolutly not. Those are the coats that hard working sailors wore and still wear. They are made for all weather and wool, good wool, repels water, does not shrink and does not smell unless something smelly gets on it or you never let it dry out. Wear it and hang it in a warm place to dry in between. You may need to wipe it down now and then when you get in from heavy rain or snow to help the drying process. It can be dry cleaned as needed, yearly unless you get it really dirty! One of the greatest pieces of clothing made!

Would the United States Navy issue sailors jackets that cannot be worn in the rain? Sailors tend to get wet from time to time.

Seriously, my old pea coat has weatherd many storms. Real wool sheds water. When it is wet, toss it in the clothes dryer on "cool." Hot drying could cause the jacket to stiffen or shrink.

no matter what treatment you think you can get to water proof wool..it wont work, they dont exsist. Wool should not be worn in rain...but my try the dryel home system if it does get wet for only like 15 min to get the smell out.

There is nothing you can do.It should not get too wet.
