Here's my situtation,
I currently have a labtop (Wi-Fi enabled) connected directly to Road runner downstairs in my living room. I am thinking about buying a desktop for my bedroom up-stairs. I want to make my labtop have wireless internet, while the desktop is connected directly to Road Runner in my bedroom. Can I just transfer my cable modem to my bedroom and hook it up to my desktop? Does the computer need software to be installed on it in order to use Road Runner? What else would I need to buy in order for my labtop to be wireless? How would I do this?

Thanks

First of all, it's LAPTOP, not labtop. :-)

You can buy a wireless router that you can use to share your internet connection with lots of computers in your house, both wireless and wired. You'd hook up your cable modem to the router and the PCs to the router. You can get a router for $50.

Move the broadband connection to upstairs. Buy wireless router and connect it to the broadband router( Road Runner). Connect your desktop to the wireless router directly using a cable. Your laptop can be wireless downstairs. Put the wireless router at a higher elevation will give your more coverage around your house/apt.

You're on the right track.

You can start by moving the cable modem to a place that's convenient to your desktop PC. Sounds like moving it upstairs will work out best for you.

Next, you're gonna need to get a wireless router and install it next to wherever you place your cable modem.

You will want to connect your wireless router directly to the cable modem (using the WAN port on your router). Then connect your desktop PC directly to the wireless router (all of the consumer models come with a 4 port switch on them).

Then you'll be able to use your laptop's wireless card to connect to the wireless router. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's quick startup instructions to get you up and running. You'll also want to setup security on your wireless router to keep it from being compromised by other users. See the manual or manufacturer's website for detailed instructions.

This should get you up and running and keep your (somewhat) safe from hackers.

Good Luck.

Your best bet would be to go to a computer or electronics store near by you and ask someone in customer service to assist you. It's a lot easier and if we were to answer your questions, we might get close, but we need your computer type and where you are from to actually explain how you would do this word-for-word. I just KNOW there are people out there that actually get paid to talk people like you through these situations. If you use your right to ask them, you might just save yourself a lot more time and money.
