My G'pa passed away in June, and I've been placed in charge of his car, a '89 Buick Lesabre with 110,000 miles on it. I'm too busy to find someone who will pay more for it, so it sits.
How often should I drive it and why? I've heard of needing to put the car on blocks, etc.

Thank You for your insights.

You should drive it a least once a week for about a half hour and some freeway driving as well

What are your ultimate plans for the vehicle? You're looking at a car that is worth around $800. Unless you want to keep it for sentimental value reasons, put a for sale sign on it and sell it to the first person who comes up with $800 cash.

If you want to save it for the next generation and have room to store it, drain all the fluids, put it on blocks, put a car cover on it or store it inside a garage, and pretty much ignore it until you are ready to have the next generation drive it.

When that time comes, check all the belts and hoses, replace if needed, put in the needed fluids and a battery and start it up. Check the tires for wear, make sure they have enough air, take it off the blocks and give it to the next generation. Don't let them drive it away until they have insurance on it though.

If you drive it to the store or short trips on the weekend that should be fine. just little trips to keep it running OK and check the fluids. Keep the tank full in the winter to prevent moisture building up.
You only put it on blocks if you are going to leave it fir more than say 4 months, then deflate the tires and put up on blocks.

you can either put it on blocks, and disconnect the battery, or let it run every day for about 10 minutes till you can sell it, the first way saves you some money, but if the car stands for a long time unuesed ,you may need a mechanic to get it running again

the car is old with pleanty of miles already on it i think even if you drive it every wk you;ll get tired of doing it & it will end up sitting if you put it on blocks the car will turn to crap from just sitting the belts hoses tires ect will dry out & every thing else will stiffen up really i think if you don;t use it than you should sell it ,it gets terrable ,terrable gas milage after a year or so it will be junk so get something for it or you;ll feel guilty for junking it

extra recent autos would desire to be pushed regularly. in line with risk as quickly as a week force it to the shop as a replace of her automobile. My Duster in basic terms sits in my driveway and that i had to place its battery in my on a standard basis motive force and it wasn't lifeless. in line with risk pickup a small battery charger with a show that tells the lvl of the battery. each now and then, hook it up, examine the lvl and supply it an hour or 2 to spice up it. maximum bins have an vehicle-provide up so it does no longer harm to pass away it on an afternoon or so after it sits awhile. even in line with risk unhook the battery and stow contained in the storage. some ppl say that if it sits on the concrete it truly is going to pass undesirable, in all risk an previous wive's tale, yet could no longer harm to placed on a shelf or some thing. desire this helped.

I'd say at least once a week you should start it, and drive it around the block. That way none of the seals dry rot or fuel injectors clog up, or the gas gets stale, ect.

you dont really need to drive it at all, all you have to do is start it and let it warm up just to get the fluids moving and give the thermostat a chance to open and mabye run the shifter though the gears once or twice.

if you have sentimental reasons for keeping the car keep it. if you don't sell it.but don't let it sit because it will deteriorate just as fast if you let it sit.either use it or sell it and let someone else use it. thats what a car was made for, to drive.

if you can, drain the fuel line and you will be fine, if not, drive it at least once a month so you would be able to check up on it
