I've just bought some woodland, and we're in the process of building a small, eco-friendly log cabin right in the middle of the woods- it is going to be my first home when i leave college, it is small but has full amenities.

The woods back on to a road which takes you to the nearest town about five miles away. Where I am in the woods it is very quiet and peaceful, for all you know you could be 1000 miles away from the nearest other person. Heating is provided by a Rayburn multi-fuel.

So does seeking this isolation at the age of 21 make me slightly weird?

No so long as you have a good mix by visiting friends or town as well.

No you're not weird. In fact I would like to do the same thing bu t can I just make a point.

most woodland is protected and doesn't have planning permission. If you plan to put a wood shed up that is fine but you are going to live in it which makes it a habitable build for which you WILL need planning permission - which you are unlikely to get, and without planning permission you will have problems connecting to the utilities. Plus when your local council finds out they will be very unhappy.

Not at all, I live out in the sticks, have since I was 19, and love the peace and quiet. If you want the noise of town and people around you you can choose to go out. A home should be whatever you want it to be and if you are happy being isolated then good on you. Sounds a lovely place to live.

Not at all... You are fortunate to be able to: a) purchase any kind of property and b) to have the property located in what sounds like an idyllic place.
You have all the necessities (and then some) there or very close by.
I think everyone needs a quiet, peaceful place in which to relax physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, etc.
College and the work place can be, at times, very stressful and harrowing.
Enjoy and lavish in the solitude!!

Not at all, it just makes you human and someone who values their peace and quiet, something that is lacking in many peoples life's today, just because you have a nice home in the woods doesn't mean to say you will never go into town does it.

Doesn't make you weird at all, not everyone likes the city life. Especially with life nowdays being so hectic, you need the peace and quiet. Besides, being so close to a town, sounds like you can have the best of both worlds.

No mate, it sounds excellent; but if ever some dodgy violent intruder decides to come and visit you in the middle of the night, you might want to build an eco friendly escape tunnel back to town!

I love that sense of isolation when you are out in the woods or in a medow. The only thing is would't it get a bit boring after a while. You might not appreciate it so much when you have it all the time. Any how just enjoy you own capacity to enjoy peace. You're lucky.

I think it makes you the envy of a whole lot of people twice or three times your age. But then I'm an old hippie who doesn't like living in a McMansion surrounded by other McMansions.
