I have a question for all ya good pple about racial disharmony. I am of the opinion that we face racial disharmony because we are not honest with each other. We instead point accusing fingers in whispers & in private.

For example: I went to an Ivy Leage university which has majority caucasian kids but there were also Asian and Afro-American kids. Now, some black kids in the surrounding neighbourhood would come to campus & jack the white kids for cash and gear. That made a lot of white kids afraid of black men in general and, I being black & a foreigner, could understand their fear. But there are 2 problems here: 1) The black kids on campus remained quiet even as the white kids were attacked repeatedly. 2) The white kids did not speak out about their fear of ALL black men. They just avoided them like the plague.

This is one example, and I know that blacks (& other races) can cite examples that go the other way. But, for goodness sake, why do we tolerate this nonsense?

The Black kids on the campus were just as afraid of the White kids. You are assuming that the Black college kids have the same street mentality as those bullies..Most of the crimes that the Black criminals commit are against Black people. We are afraid too.

I don't fully understand your question. What are the black kids supposed to do? I doubt that they know these people who are committing the crimes. So what can they do to stop it. I don't feel as though they should be obligated to speak up about it, just because the perpetrator have the same color of skin as them. Speaking from experience, young black kids at majority white higher learning institutions have enough to deal with, without taking on the problems created by people who are off campus. It could also be a cultured thing, I'm black and I was always taught to take care of my problems. If I know that people are on campus and might attack me then I'm going to make accommodations for it regardless of my race. I will go out in groups, especially at night, carry some mace, keep a cell phone, etc. I would do everything in my might not be a walking target.

Also, I doubt the white kids say anything about being afraid because they know that it isn't fair or smart. I have a feeling that they may not feel good about the belief that they're holding. They're probably having thoughts like the segregationists back during the civil rights era. Also, speaking from experience, all of my white friends (both racist and non racists) have told me that they've always told themselves while growing up that they wouldn't be racist like their parents, grandparents, etc. Now, when they're put in a situation that tests their beliefs they tend to side with their parents, grandparents, etc.

I think that it's unfortunate on both sides. But I guess it's just the way of the world. Looking at it from the outside in, the only solution I could think of would be for people who are unbiased and can see both sides to speak up.

Do you know why there is racial disharmony? It's because of pride. Black people have become the new white people by slowly developing the same kind of narrow-minded racism that they fought to eliminate for so many years. Black people who call white people racists usually end up racist themselves because of the bitterness and the hatred that they allow to fester inside of themselves that blinds them to the fact that one group of people does not constitute their entire race. Until every single person in this country realizes that there is no such thing as racial superiority or racial inferiority there will always be some excuse in someone's mind to harbor racial prejudice.

People are afraid to be honest because so many people still get offended when this subject is broached. I am Caucasian and have tried to tell people that I was a victim of prejudice by African-Americans a couple of times when I was younger. This affected my perceptions of race differences and I would like to clear it up by talking to people. But the couple of people I told acted like I had no right to be upset because I'm white. It would be nice if people could discuss these issues without becoming ticked off or violent.

Hun as long as parents are teaching these kids that there is a difference between people as far as culture and race is concerned kids will take what they learn and keep passing it on. hate never ended and never will both black and white still have the hate that should no longer exist. I had a girl tell me the hair stuff I use is for black peope.. I was like no its for people with hair. The a girl said one time I didnt know white people eat that I was like its food isnt it.
Comments like that go to say it is in alot of peoples minds black white green or purple .. Until they let go of what once was and move on to what can be we will be stuck in a world of hate and judgement.

I am of the belief that we tolerate 'this nonsense', because of what we are taught. You have to include that in your equation. What did your parents teach you about racial harmony? Yes, I agree that these almost adult people should have their own ideas about it, but you are a product of what you were raised by. I think if you have a good example set by your parents to love everyone regardless of skin pigment that will help ease your fears when something unfortunate or uncomfortable happens to you involving another race. And you should ALWAYS remember that even though we are often divided by culture, race is only pigment. It is our cultural ideas that divide us.

I agree that fear is a big part of racial disharmony!

I think human beings are often dishonest because they are afraid of being thought of as untolerant to the other group of people. Sometimes to dispel a creeping bias that may be floating in our brain we need to talk it out. That way someone else can point out the error in our thinking. But if we can't do that because we ourselves are afraid of being thought of as intolerant we can't take that first step.

Excellent question !!! And like you, I sure wish we can all come together and solve any problems we have . I say enough already!!..It would surely be nice if everyone started on a clean slate.........No animosity toward anyone...........But the first time someone started anything, then officials should get that person and question them to find out why? why? why? If there are more than one, then each person questioned seperately...We need to get to the root of this problem,,,,,,,,,But you know what hon? We are just dreaming because we will never get everyone to agree to this..I can't figure it out......Good luck to you..Hang in there!

People hate what they fear. People fear what they don't understand. People make assumptions based upon fears that tie into what they hate. It's a vicious circle of ignorance caused by lack of understanding. Education and communication tends to break barriers like this. People are very group orientated. That's how our brains are wired at birth.

I found that in life if I am friendly yet keep my mouth shut I fit in just fine.
