In laymans terms, it is the brain.
Does all the work, memory, thinking etc.

Calculate and compare. Everything a processor does is either a mathematical computation or a comparison of two pieces of information. Programs or applications are just lists of instructions telling the processor which data to perform what calculations or comparisons on.

ok if u r asking what it does then u probably have no clue what some of these ppl said so u have clusters of info on ur hard drive, the processor gets those little clusters of info and sends them to ur ram where the clusters then expand and gets put together from there it is then sent to varius locations like ur video card or sound card ect... then u get to play ur game or rock out on ur boomin headphones

well it basicly runs evrything in the computer .. everything has to go through it .. were you looking for a more in depth answer ?.. or just the basics?
