In Greek mythology, they helped first off by creating humans in the first place, then they hindered them by refusing them fire
They aided them by creating sun and moon light, and hindered them by tricking Pandora into releasing all the miseries into the world.
They aided them by birthing and motivating heroes and hindered them by creating the monsters and obstacles the heroes had to overcome.
The aided them by sponsering cities and hindered them by warring amonst themselves, dragging the cities into it.
