I want to buy several of the Dummies books in Amazon, and wanted to see if they actually help? Has anyone read one of this books? Are they easy to understand? How are they written and, and how is information organized in them?

Are they useful to learn a new langage? (French, Chinese, German, etc.)

I've found the ones I have read to be great for learning the basics and forming a strong foundation for building on.

I have been using “…For Dummies” since I got my first computer and didn’t know squat! If I hadn’t used the books, I’d still be sitting in front of a blank computer. I am self taught, but ALL my knowledge about computers and programs have come from the dummies books. Shop around and before you buy online, check the books out in the local bookstores, thumb through them and pick the ones that work best for you. Amazon.com and eBay is where I have gotten some really good deals…on anything and everything. If you can read and follow simple directions, then you can lean from the dummies books! The books are organized from the first thing you may need to know, with comic narration by the author, to the last thing you'll need to know to get you up and running…on any subject.

I don't think anyone can speak conclusively for the series, since they are all written by different authors, but:
1) They *are* all written by experts in the field, who know what they're doing,
2) From the ones I've read, they really do cover the basic topics you need to know about various fields (although as they run out of things to make books on, there are more books with 30 pages of content and 150 pages of filler),
3) They're pretty easy to nagivate through, and well indexed.

They are generally a good introduction into a subject. However, they do not tend to take on truly advanced subject matter. When done with one, try looking for more subject specific materials.

Yes, they are good. The info are organized into chapters. Why don't you try before you buy? Download one using BitTorrent ;)

I've found them pretty good. Easy to understand. I forget how they are organized, but it's pretty logical.

I heard a lot about them and see them almost everywhere. I think it would be worth it to try it out. I do not think it helps everyone but it can help.

I couldn't make head nor tail of them, but then, I'm not a dummy.
Ditto the "Idiot" books.
