Story ideas are everywhere. The problem is not an idea, it's the execution of an idea that makes something good.

What do you feel passionate about? What do you hate or fear? Stories are about conflict and problems. Resolution of conflict is what moves the plot along.

Look around you. Listen to people talk at restaurants, at airports, read newspapers, think about what you wish you knew. What would you most like not to happen, what would you do if it did happen?

Sometimes, just thinking up weird things is a good way to think of a new idea for a story. Write down a bunch of strange ideas on everything you can think of, then try to figure out how they could all be connected.

A good book on writing is "Beginnings, Middles and Ends" by Nancy Kress.

Sometimes just write down "I have no idea" over and over until you are so bored that you think up something in self-defense. Or create a file called garbage and type in anything- it's ok because it's garbage and doesn't have to be good. Take an old plot and turn it on its head. Shakespeare stole from Ovid and then turned the plot into his own creation.

Ex. 7 Samurai becomes the Magnificent 7. Since there are only about 7-8 plots in the universe, you can endlessly recycle them by putting your own views and images and characters in them.

Good luck.

OK, no one can answer this question but there are many things you can do to "jog" your mind into thinking.

First buy yourself a note book, write about the things around you, emotions etc.

Write a random word then write all the connecting words and your thoughts around it, like a spider diagram, this is a good way of collecting ideas.

Take a random situation then write a short staory about it, pick a time place, location etc.

All these things and more mean you get in the habit of writing for fun, then from there your own ideas will flow.

Hope this helps.

You couold also take a creative writing course.

Give your conscious mind a break and let your subconscious think about it for a while. Go outside, read a book, watch a movie or tv show, meditate, exercise, ANYTHING that get's your mind off the book you're trying to write.

Or you can just start writing anything that comes to mind. Poems, recipes, random thoughts, I mean seriously, anything! Eventually, the idea will come, and you'll already have a pen/pencil or be at the keyboard when it does.

Ideas are always rough, so don't try to make a complete story about the first idea you have. Get it down, then refine it. Think on how to improve it, what will happen as your characters set out on the quest or whatever to solve the problem, history of the places they go and villages/towns/cities they pass through. All of this is NECESSARY to getting a book out of one idea.

Good luck.

I'd love to be able to help. This is something I have been thinking about myself....as I have always been good at writing short pieces......and would love to write a novel..

The problem being that the small pieces have been on something specific that needed to be written about.....and as you imply in your thread.....this is the problem. We think we can write a novel but are clueless on ideas!

Maybe we should offer each other a topic and away we go....!

I'm not that good at writing but I have been thinking about writing a book about high school The unwritten rules and the cliques. It is something that most people could relate to and maybe be useful. If you like the idea e-mail me at mouseminna@yahoo.com

Write a book about Politically Incorrect media from 1900-2000. Find examples of advertising, news articles, brochures, etc. that are anti race, anti woman, anti gay, and so forth. Pull it all together into one coffee table book. You'll have a hit. Nostalgia always sells.

Read the newspaper. Usually the daily local papers have great topics to give you a start. The rest is up to you. You don't even have to know how your story will end when you start it; just surpise yourself. Good luck! It's Author time!

Girl, I'm with you. I'm a writer, and I always get writer's block. Why don't I give you an idea I've had for a long time, but can't get it on paper. Maybe you can. Hmmmmm, let me see. There's a girl, who has bad luck. Her mom died when she was younger. Her dad remarried, and her stepmom hates her. She goes to school, but leaves early one day because her classmates pick on her. She goes, home, and her stepmom tells her that her dad is dead. Her stepmom sends her off to boarding school, and bad things happen. Like students die suddenly. I don't know what else. Fill in spaces. I can't think of anymore ideas................ What do you think? You don't have to use it if you don't like it.
