There is a new product out there for skiers. It's like an inflatable live preserver that makes you lighter than the snow, keeping you high enough that you can dig yourself out on your own. It also has a radio transponder to assist search crews in case you still can't get out.

There is not much you can do except run sideways to the flow and hope you can escape. Running downhill you can't out run it. The only good place to be during an avalanche is over on the next hill, watching.
