i have spina bifita my self and i know that when youre spine is not formed [correctly] it is hadr to repair because the risk of further damge is to great for a living of a life other than needing a wheelchair for mobillity whe may learn to walk some as she gets older for me my feeling stops just below my knees but i can now feel past it some nnot much but some so no need to worry my life is fine i dont worry what i cant do i just worry how many stupid things can i do with out paralizing my self or killing my self i live it to the fullist and so should she
the main reason is i am partially parallyzed is my spinal cord is thinned in my spinal colum due to spina bifita and my spinal colum is twisted to mine is pretty severe but i dont care i am alive thst is what counts

Surgeons can't fix all spinal cord injuries. Spina bifida is a congenital birth defect, which means that the damage happens before the child is born, and the spinal column is still developing. In some cases there can be surgical relief of some symptoms, but medical science just isn't that good yet.

A few things that could help your outlook, if not your little girl's condition:
1. Why "wheelchair bound"? Is she tied to it? Does she sleep in it? She uses a wheelchair for mobility, she is not bound to it or by it.
2. Before you can help her understand her disability, you have to understand it yourself. Do your research. Seek out support groups. Your little girl has the potential to do great things in her life - don't let your perceptions hold her back.

Good luck and God bless.

There are always some limitations on what can be done. It is not like repairing a bridge or a motor on a car. The patient must be kept alive during the process, and sometimes we don't know how to do that. So the surgery is not done until a better method is figured out. Unfortunately we cannot predict breakthroughs in medicine.

My sister in law has Spina Bifida, and my mother in law asks the same question. I think it's just something they've not been able to sort yet. Although the way modern medicines have progressed you'd have thought they could do something. My heart goes out to you both xx

Ive known 2 kids with spina biffida one learnt to walk with callipers but they fitted waist high and her body weight wasn't on her legs she sort of stood up but sat in side it and she used to rock sideways to walk she was paralysed from waist down and she got about amazing with it,and the other child i know tried callipers and they were great for her to but through laziness her mum wouldn't put her in them and she remained in a wheel chair.Ask her specialist about trying them.
