It's better to buy a barebones kit. It has the case, motherboard, powersupply, and processor already installed and tested. You get to choose which motherboard and processor you want, then they build and test the barebones kit for you. It is just as cheap to do it this way than to truly start from scratch, and it eliminates the hardest part of the job. Go to
http://www.pricewatch.com

look at barebone kits. It will show you which places have the best deals on whichever processor you want to base your system build on.

The step by step instructions are free (not building them for free - you do have to buy the parts). Try the URL below:

http://www.geeks/techtips/techtip-hardware.asp

This is NOT an advertisement for Geeks, but that IS where I buy all my electronics and computer parts.

After you build it, you will still need an operating system (e.g Windows XP or Vista) and a bunch of applications.

Good luck!!

Unless you're doing this as a learning exercise, or just to say you "did it", I wouldn't advise it.

The money that you save will be minimal, and then you won't have any warranty or support for the computer. In fact, it's possible that you'll spend more as a similar computer from one of the big vendors!

i can,t remember any specific sites, but encourgae you to build from scratch, store bought comps are comparable in price, but often come with cheap micro atx boards/minimul power supplys/genaric memory ,and insufficiant cooling, not to mention there built in spyware, barebones kits tend to use simular components,go to web sites like pc magazine and look at those barebone kits just to see what parts are compatable!
