Like miss Sunshine had stated, a Chinese Proverb is basically words of wisdom. I am chinese and I get this stuff all the time. The proverb itself does not tell what you should do strait out, instead it tells you what you should do in an indirect way. One proverb that my mother always says to me is.
"You see a bird fly, but you don't see it's nest."
Sounds confusing... but if you look at it, it refers to dating... It means, if you're dating a girl/guy, thus the bird, make sure to see it's nest or it's home. That way, you'll get a better understanding of what the girl/guy is like, for example his/her bedroom, house, family structure, etc.
Hope this helps.

Words of wisdom. These are some examples: A book is like a garden carried in the pocket. A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.

Ancient China is noted for it's rich philosophical traditions. Many sayings of great wisdom have been recorded and often appear in fortune cookies. For example:
Confuscious say "Man with hole in pants...feeling cocky!"
