With the open hand to the butt is they way to go. When I was growing up, I got it that way, but it was on my bare butt. It did make it sting a bit, but now marks, bruises, etc....no abuse. It did the trick on my and I turned out just fine.

Depending on the age of the child. When a child is old enough to reason with, I dont believe they should be spanked, but reasoned with instead. If it is a little one in a nappy and they are doing something that is dangerous then a slap on the bottom will get their attention, it doesnt hurt them, but its the shock and the noise that will make them realise they are doing something naughty. A tap on the hand will help sometimes if they are touching a powerpoint or something, but always tap them with a stern "No" A spanking should only be used as a last resort, and its not to hurt a child...I dont believe a spanking should hurt...it should be used as a shock value, nothing else. I have never seen any good results from a child who has been hit who is left with bruises and hand marks. When those children grow up and if you hurt a child physically by the way you discipline them can have long lasting effects. Never ever use anything other than your open hand. Never slap them across the face, only ever slap them on their bottom or their hand. Never use a weapon, eg, a power cord or a wooden spoon. Anything that hurts a child can be considered abuse.

I read that you should smack with an object thus associating the pain and punishment with the object rather than yourself. I'm talking more like a newspaper or slipper, which is what I use. In fact I don't have to use it any more with my 9yr old, I just have to take my slipper off and her attitude changes straight away. When I spanked her with my hand she just laughed at me and said it didn't hurt, so I gave up on that pretty quick. Obviously you must give a number of smacks according to the naughtiness. Like 3 smacks is big punishment. Well that's how I do it, and honestly I think the last time I smacked my kid was over a year ago, she quits being insolent as soon as she sees the slipper!
