I am in south Texas, zone 9, 25 miles inland from the coast (zone 8 begins at least 21/2 hours north of here). We will need 1000 cut flowers the third week of March next year. This is my first year at growing in zone 9.....am going to build up with railroad ties about 1/3 of an acre. Any help with seeds sown now or when?? perennials to bloom in March and bulbs, too....any flower that can be cut the third week of March in this zone....thanks so much....

Cassie,
Got your message. If this is a "wild" area you might try a wildflower mix. Usually good L&G Centers have wild flower mixes of the region they are located in. Some are very pretty, like cosmos, or diff. types of daisys, coneflowers, etc.

If it's an area that will all be flower beds I would try some annuals as soon as they become available in TX--I would guess in late Feb. Maybe you could get them growing enough to get the first flush of blooms. And you always have bulbs--late daffodils, early lilies, dahlias, etc. Of course bulbs cost more that planting flats or seeds.

If you are going to go with seeds I would plant them as soon as the cold part of winter is gone. I haven't seen many freezing temps down there but I'm sure there must be. It freezes in FL now and then. Hope this helps.
