What it really means, is that you're drying your clothes for too long. As
cotton ( or blends of) fabric gets older, the longer you dry it, the hotter it gets
and little bitty pieces of that fabric separate and there's your lint problem.
Say, you overdry a red shirt and you see a lot of red lint in your trap - that's
part of your shirt. Which is why, the more times you dry a shirt, the thinner the
material gets. The trick is to under dry your load so that it is just a little
damp and if you hang them up right away, you wont have that mildewy smell.
Your clothes will last longer and you wont have your lint problem.

Lint needs to be cleaned out, so it doesn't start a fire in the hose leading from the dryer to the outside.
