WAN is the Wide Area Network, or Internet. That is OUTSIDE of your local network.

LAN is the Local Area Network. That is the network of computer INSIDE your local area, which includes any computer that is connected to your Router. Hopefully, you KNOW about all of these computers. If you have a wireless network, then use the Wireless Security feature and use a PASSWORD. You see, someone could join your local area if you don't.

Wide Area Network usually comprised of multiple LANs

If you are connecting up your router, The WAN port connects to your cable/DSL modem. The LAN ports connect to your computers, network pronters, and whatnot.
