Get a Dyson. They rock! (well - as far as vacuum cleaners can rock, anyway...)

I'd have nothing but a Kirby. Can only be purchased only by calling and asking for a demo in your home. BTW Warren Buffet owns the Kirby company now.
You can buy great used Kirby's at some vacuum/repair shops. I couldn't begin to tell you everything they do, I own a G2000 Kirby Home Maintance System, cost $1200. Some of the things I can do w/my Home Maintance System:
The bags are sealed inside in some type rubber that will not let dust/dirt be discharged into your environment,& are hypo-allergin safe.
The suction is so strong you can see the suction from an inch or 2 away from the machine.
Vacuum upright or convert to a canister for under furniture, walls, ceilings & cilng fans, upholstery,to name a few.
Can reverse the air flow & unstop drains, blow up inflatables.
Has different attachments and a very important one is,it's a dry carpet shampoo'er (amazing to watch & do this).
Can step, jump on, run over the attachments & will not phase them.
Can buy the extra attachment to buff & clean hardwood & any type flat, non carpet floor.
32 ft cord, has its own serial # on the machine that cannot be removed for you the owner, should it burn up-stop working in the lifetime the owner has it,It will be rebuilt by the Kirby Co for 1/10th of you original cost.
Mine is 6 yrs old, still like brand new in performance.

In my opinion, I would not buy a Rainbow! My mother has one that she paid over $1000 for and I would lots have my upright that came from WalMart. You have to put water in it every time you vaccum and then empty it; in other words, it's just a pain to deal with. Before that she had an Electrolux cannister and I loved it. Like you said, you could get it underneath lower furniture. The only drawback was that it took up too much room to store. They do make an Electrolux upright now that is great. My ex-boyfriend's mom sells them. They are a little expensive, but worth the price. They pick up grit and 'fuzzies' very well. Electrolux even has a payment plan. When I buy a new vaccum, this will be my choice.

i personally use this one the dirt devil envision> it isnt a canister system however it has an extension wand and some nifty attachments which help cleaning in corners and behind furniture and such and the power brush attachment is awesome for troublesome areas> also it"s bagless so if you vaccuum up something u didnt mean to then it"s easy to get out :) here is a pic of it......

Consumer Reports did an article on vacuums fairly recently. I think they do a really good job.
Good luck

orecks are very good they come in pairs (in the UK I don't know about elsewhere) a very lightweight upright and a compact canister both are powerful and light http://www.oreck.com/
Not Dyson's, they are not half as clever as they make out, they defiantly loose suction, oreck pick up just great.
