The point of no return had it's beginnings in aviation, and it refers to long distance flights when you exhaust more than half of your fuel and in the event of an emergency you no longer have the fuel to return to the place of origin.

you really don't know it until you've past it so the best way to make sure you never get there is to take good note of what gets you into trouble... for instance, a dude taking three drinks still thinking he can handle more, after the fourth gets obnoxious, rude and disruptive should know in the future that four is the point of no return for him and let three be his limit... a lass indulging in a make out session that invariably leads to sex that she regrets/feels guilty about should realize that making out is a point of no return for her.... same with overeating or staying up late... for each person, with each situation, that point will be different so awareness is key
