The French, not wanting to bear the expense of colonizing and supporting the territory sold it to the Americans for 10,000,000. The sale included all of the land from Louisiana to the Rocky Mountains and the Canadian border.
During the War of 1812, the Americans, who were getting their butts kicked everywhere else, defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans. After the defeat, the British got scared and ran home.
Congress started the war by voting to declare war on the British, when the Americans had a standing army of about 4,000 underpaid and under equipped men, in an effort to take Canada away. They then voted to not appropriate money to fight the war. During this war, the White House was burned and the American president was forced to flee into the Virginia mountains with his wife.
