Too much Spyware. You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
Not enough memory. With Windows XP, you should have 512MB of RAM (or more). Check your system at http://www.coastmemory.com and get more.
Type MSCONFIG from RUN (at the Start menu) Go to the Startup section and uncheck programs that you do not need. But keep your antivirus working.

Maybe you have too many things on your desktop. Try clearing off some of the useless junk. Lots of programs that may be running in the background usually slow down the start up of a computer.

One major reason why your computer starts slow is because it might be starting many programs with start up.
See whether you have yahoo messenger, msn messenger etc., being loaded when you start computer. If it does, then you can set them not to start with every start up of computer. This option is in preferences of Yahoo & MSN Messenger.
Another reason for slow startups is virus scan. If you have configured your virus scan to do an intial scan then it can slow your computer down a bit.
If you are good in editing registry, then you can see what all applications are automatically started with your computer in software--> microsoft--> windows --> run

The usual reason is that lots of programs start up, most of which you don't want or need to startup. Easy method is to download Mike Lin's Startup control panel. The standalone EXE version is sufficient.

it might be because you have too much running on startup.call a computer fixing place and see how to fix it.im going to guess they tell you to go to the start menue, click run and type in msconfig and unclick some things on the list.but I would call and see which ones you need for your start up.
