Demonstrate how the belief in gods and even the entire pantheon can provide a source of natural explanation, which sometimes is only the whim of the gods. Further, this serves two major purposes: first, it helps people unite around a common understanding of their cosmology and second, it demonstrates the apparently unfair or vengeful nature of the world as caused by a given god or goddess' whims.
