It's like a really, really bad thunderstorm that lasts for hours and hours with very strong winds. I lived in Houston during Hurricane Carla and we all gathered at my aunts 2 story house. Palm trees that were as tall as her house looked like the tops were touching the ground. Huge trees uprooted, major flooding, tornadoes, loss of power, roofs peeled off buildings, and windows blown out all over. Telephone poles, traffic lights, and big signs blown down. The house shaking from the strong winds and never ending rain.
In Galveston the tide was coming over the seawall and snakes were every where trying to get to higher ground.
I was only 7 at the time but I remember it vividly. I've been through several smaller hurricanes since but nothing compares to Carla. Having been through Carla, I could relate to those that suffered in Hurricane Katrina.

really, it's noisy. and, unless your power can stay on, dark. I slept through the first half of the hurricane that came through, which was supposedly the 'bad' side, but the power went off before i could finish my coffee and i was too distracted by the lack of coffee in the house and my (fully charged) Ipod to notice much else. My hurricane was hurricane Rita.

here in sc, we had the passing of one my first actaully....and i ahd to work in it...the rain is torrential, imange somebody with a garden hose spraying you full force, the stinging pelting rain. if you are lucky to have a rain suit it might get full of water from the intensity of it....the wind dosent help,. it pushes the rain harder, sometimes the rain is driving so hard you can see puddles making whitecaps....i know when i got home, my yard was flooded and the water was above my workboots *( the toe part). and then after i got inside i relized how hard the wind was blowing, a boom boom effect on the windows....i was lucky the power didnt go out and i was able to stay home that nite....the aftermass though was outrageous,,limbs were down, and water was rough on the waterways...sure hope this helps

I have been through several hurricanes and my job is to report the visibility and sky conditon and other things like that during them, so I literally have to stand outside during them and look around. When the winds are up around 80 knots you can lean into them and almost touch your hands to the ground like a push-up but the wind keeps you upright. It is very intense.

lot's of rain and high winds.
Last year we ran from hurricane Rita.We spent 28 hours on the road and got 45 miles away.
Tell me that don't suck ! !
My niece was due in three weeks and we were stuck in I-45 in Houston ,Texas along with several thousand folks.
You NEVER want to go thru that.
No electricity,no gas no food,no water.
People were taking care of personal business along the highway because everything was closed ! !
One word : HORRIBLE

It was very loud and scary. I was in New Orleans during Katrina. I was lucky, I was in a safe area and a safe building.
