When i turn it on it tells me to call a 'Service Engineer'. Is it worth me taking it apart an giving it a clean? It's well out of warranty.
It also gives me a number in the top left hand corner is this relevant?

I think it might be hard to clean the inside of something like that. You could get shocked or mess your system up if you don't know much about how to do it. I'd write down the number, call tech support, and even if they want you to pay, you might get some info about what the problem could be first.

The official XBOX website, www.xbox.com, has a search option where you can type "troubleshoot" or "troubleshooting". There seemed to be some results but the website wasn't running well on my computer so I can't tell you much more.

Good luck!

Buy an xbox repair guide on ebay. Repairing a games console is not rocket science. I bought a playstation 2 repair guide after my ps2 decided to stop working and I managed to fix it myself. I am even fixing other peoples consoles now

If it's an Original Xbox and not a 360 then buy a new console they are giving them away (almost). As long as you don't have important memory files on your broken one it that should work.

You might just want to call up and if it's broken you might just want to send it in and have them fix it. We had to have our xbox fixed, and it cost me 50 dollars, (actually, it's my dad's, but we all played it and I didn't want the xbox to go to waste, so I just took 50 out of my birthday money) but they ended up sending a new one. And if the same thing happens to the xbox again, they'll fix it for free.

I forgot to add, you can still have them fix it even though it's out of warranty, it just costs money. Oh, and don't sell it on ebay like one of the other people said on here. That's just messed up.
