I make handmade cards (in the UK) and i've made up a trade name. I stamp this name at the back of the cards. Is this allowed? How do i know no one else has this name. Do i have to register it first? How do i go about doing this.

Yeah, you can.
If you are just making cards, and nothing else then really you should be ok.

If you want to register your company name its expensive and complicated. Better to act as a sole trader.
If you really want to do it all properly got to CAB and get some advice. There are short business courses you can do which explains everything you need to know and will help you set up a business...(But I guess thats not what you asked!!)

Check out Companies House to see if anyone has registered the same business name as yours. But these are registered limited companies not sole traders.

You can call yourself anything you want under the law for legal purposes. So you can copyright your cards under another name that you wish to be known by. For example look at my website - you will see the copyright symbol followed by my user name - that is unique. Anyone else using the name or stealing the whole site and I'll sue them. You can download a picture or a MP3 though!

simple answer is whether the trade name you want to register has been registered before, companies house web site is a useful source . it isn't correct that only limited companies have to register with companies house , legislation also permits non plc to register names etc
