Most definitely, although the set of social circumstances that raised the modern killer has changed and so will the style of killer in the next couple of decades...
If you have a real interest in this area, can I point you to books written by John Douglas (Mindhunter) and Robert Ressler (Whoever Fights Monsters), who were among the FBI agents at the forefront of psychological profiling that has helped to catch many serial killers.

Yes, the US usually has about 50 active at any one time according to FBI records. Australia and CIS also have about 20 serial killers between them. There are also about 1-2 active in Europe at any one time.

there was a recent serial killer in johannesburg south africa - i do not know details as to if he has been caught butthere have been around 12 deaths

Yes there are, but they move to state to state, so its hard to catch them, and the worst part, most don't even look the part, like the perverts on -DATELINE-
