I'm changing the harmonic balancer on my 76 GMC Jimmy 4x4. the one that the place gave me is smaller than the one that was originally on the motor. won't this screw up the motor?

It depends. If you have a 350 or 305 (5.7 and 5.0 ltr) motor they were balanced internally and a smaller balancer wouldn't affect the balance of the motor. See if your pulleys will bolt up correctly, and make sure the height is the same when you compare the old versus the new on a flat surface.

If so it will probably work. It might be a re-design, or a cheaper design, or something like that.

One problem I can think of is that the timing mark index will be pretty far from the balacer, making the timing hard to set

If it were me I'd still feel better with one exacty the same, though.

Check with the Chevy dealer: they might not want that much for one, unless this is where you are getting it.

The harmonic balancer is weighted for a particular engine to balance the various components attached to the crankshaft. Just throwing any old balancer on your engine could cause trouble.

Only if it has a vibration, just check with the dealer parts manger about this.

no it will be fine because the new smaller one is like an updated version and they prob dont make that part anymore.
