Many Democrats, such as myself, believe Studds should not have been made a hero.
But the fact is that Foley was an active advocate for child safety against predators. And many Republicans chose to keep Foley's business of interacting with underage kids secret, until the media found out about it. That makes Republicans also hypocrites.
But please do the research. This is not nearly the first time a Republican congressman, or Democratic congressman for that matter, has done things like that.

It isn't that Foley is gay but the fact that he IM'ed distasteful and sexually graphic messages to a young page. Doesn't matter if the page was male or female but the fact that the page was male only adds to the irony of him being a republican.
Now if he had written these pages to a male of a similiar age then it wouldn't have been much of a problem.
