People like to talk about themselves, so you should ask them questions but don't sound like you are interrogating them.
For example, I'm thinking of going to see a movie next week. Have you seen any good movies lately? Then they can talk about themselves.
Do not talk about religion or politics until you know someone better.
Talk about an interesting article you read in the paper. Today in the paper I saw an article about........whatever. Did you hear about that?
