It tries to boot, gets to the blue xp screen, then goes to a screen stating a recent hardware addition may have caused an error. Although, I didn't actually add anything. Now I've had this happen before with this computer, and the only way I could get it to startup was to completely reinstall xp and I lost everything. Fortunately it was brand new and I didn't have much on it, but the other has years of files on it. Does anyone know how to get it to startup without losing everything? And the other way of starting up by losing them.. I seem to have forgotten how. Thanks.

When it starts to boot hit F8 until you get a screen with some options. Select Boot to Last Known Good Configuration and see if that works. If not try Safe Mode.

Boot from your bootable XP CD install disc and go through initial installation procedures. Before anything gets copied to your computer, you will see a prompt asking which partition XP will use. Select the partition with the largest size and when asked what to do with the partition, select "Leave the file system intact". This will leave your files on your hard disk and will install windows on another folder.

Press f8 repeatedly while the machine boots, and get into the menu.

Boot last known good configuration

or

Safe Mode

Try safe mode. If that will let you in you should be able to do a system restore to a few days before the power outage.

boot in the safe mode by pressing f8 and try to uninstall the last hardware you have installed togather with the driver then try to boot again normally.

If you have your original cd ROM that came with it put it in and you might be able to reload everything that was on your computer.
