Well as suggested it is a Microsoft software package that was around in the mid nineties. Although a lot of people think it sub standard, it is in fact quite good I thought. It has a word processing programme, a spreadsheet, and a database. The later variations had a presentation option where a number of templates were stored to load up and then streamline to your requirements. The other functions also had the option of templates, which was handy for the spreadsheets, and certain other word reports etc. It has of course less functions than the current offerings, but it was easier to use, nowadays there are so many items on the toolbar, and functions that either you won't use or had never heard of and probably need to go on a short, or long depending, course to get the most out of the latest technology. If it's for sale with the laptop, and pre loaded, try and get the original installation disk as it will have the security code on it, and if the software screws up and you need to reload, you won't be able to, or you will have difficulty if you are or know a Techie who could devise a cracker.

It is the kind of very basic wordprocessing prog that comes with commercially bought computers in places like PC World. You will be able to wordprocess Ok on it, but it has nothing like the capacity and usefulness of say Microsoft Word. MS Word is part of a family of progs called MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) or the better MS Office Professional (which has MS Access database too).
Depends what you need it for. If you want to write an epic novel, Works is fine. If you want to move files between home and work or email them to other computers, Word would be much more compatible. Office or Office Pro would be even better, but costs much more and is rarely given away free with a new computer.

Try to avoid buying Microsoft Works if you want to take files back and forth from your office PC. Your office PC will be using a more upgraded version of Microsoft products -- a better Microsoft Word, for example -- with different file formats from Microsoft Works. When you buy your PC, tell them you want regular Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and not some dinky cutdown version. (Sorry, that's my unsolicited advise!)

Microsoft Works and Microsoft place of work are 2 very distinctive courses. Works is designed for basically kinfolk use. pupil comments, resumes, and so on. Microsoft Works comes with "Powerpoint Viewer" which permits you to view (no longer edit) any powerpoint presentation. maximum computers will contain a 60 day unfastened trial of place of work '03 (or it may desire to contain place of work '07 simply by fact of maximum new computers turning out to be to be "Vista Compatable.") yet you will nonetheless could desire to purchase the appliance in some unspecified time interior the destiny in time.

It means you're buying a cheap laptop. Works 8 has a wordprocessor, database, spreadsheet and calender - the calender is useful! But no spell checker! If you're used to office - you will probably think you have been done! MS Word has a spell checker and does grammar and stuff. Also web pages and emails - someone sent me a CV done with the wordprocessor on works and none of my office programs would open the bugger.

Its a program made by microsoft. Here are somethings it does:
Share and edit word processing and spreadsheet files with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel users
Take the guesswork out of creating resumes, letters, reports, and budgets with easy-to-use templates.
Stay connected with family and friends through Address Book and E-mail.

It's a cheap version of Microsoft Office. It may include a basic version or Microsoft Word, but it will have a toy version of excel. It will not have powerpoint, publisher, or much by way of bells and whistles.

It's a cut-down suite, like Office, only with very basic applications. If you're lucky, it'll be the Works Suite, and you'll at least get Word.
Note that the default Works file formats aren't the Office formats, but its very own ones. I think they import each other's files, but expect more compatibility problems.

Its a cheaper/crappier version of microsoft office. You can get your new laptop and just find someone who has microsoft office to borrow/send you it. Like i did with both of my computers, both compaq and both had microsoft works. Its rubbish.
