Hi I'm a female hs xc runner, and I want to know what is the best way to achieve a sub-20 time for a 3mi race. In my last question I posted a month ago, my best time was around 21:30. Last week I achieved 20:16. (So close!) The season is halfway done, so any advice?

Concentrating on your speed workouts will do it for you! Here is an example of a good training program: http://www.runningtimes.com/rt/articles/?id=6026&c=36
Hill repeats will also help. (I assume you are running a lot of hills in your races.)

Taking off over a minute of an allready decent time is pretty impressive for one season.

Keep training hard. When you taper at the end of the season, you should see a drop in your time. Hopefully that and the excitement of post-season racing will push you under 20.

Good luck.

Wow, you are pretty good. My best is a 24:47, but I'd say just keep picking up the training, sprint up the hills, stride out on the downhills, and try starting your ending sprint sooner.

Keep running hard in practice, lesson to your body, rest before meets, and pick off people one at time during the race.
