i have a 2003 hyundai accent. it is automatic with 35k miles. no mechanical problems. however, i noticed today that i got a 'check engine ' message on the dashboard today. there are no noises and the car has all necessary fluids, (oil, coolant, transmission etc).

the car starts and runs fine as usual. any suggestion on why i have the check engine light and how i can turn it off.

i will get a tune up soon (new spark plugs, air filter etc) but i dont think a need for a tune up would give me the check engine lightt.

thanks

First, by law emision controls have a 50,000 mile warranty, so this should be a "freebie" at the dealer.

The light comes on when the computer sees a sensor value that is out of specificaitions. It is no huge thing if your engine still seems to be running OK, but you shoudl check into it as soon as possible. It might affect your gas mileage, and gas is still expensive! The check engine light is not as urgent as the oil or temperature light!

Many auto parts stores will "read out" the troouble code stored in your car's computer for free. if the light is on, a code will be there.

Your check engine light can come on for any number of reasons. Many of the newer cars today have a light that comes on to tell yo it is due for it's 35K regular check up. You can not get the light off until you get the check up done. It is to protect your motor. When the mechanice does the check up and maintenance they have a code that they use that turns the light off. Don't try to disable it yourself. If you do and it never comes on then you will never know if you have a serious problem. Some cars are sensitive. But it can come on when oil is low, water is low, power is low (battery), something come lose, or ?
Get it checked.

Well before you do a tune up
IE plugs make sure they are not platinum
Those are good for about 100,000 miles and cost alot more.
As for the the light. Alot of emission items are under warranty for 3year 50,000 miles and some 8 years 80,000 miles
take to the dealer to check that first it may be free of charge

Well Tom,
Welcome to the I see no reason for the stupid light club.
1. try taking off the replacing the gas cap.
2. go to autozone and have them read for free the code in the engine causing the light to come on.
3. go get it fixed.

Autozone will diagnose it for free for you as will most other large part shops.. mostlikely its a bad o2 sensor or a bad emissions sensor that is causing the code...

3 year 36k emissions system warranty, 10 year 100k bumper to bumper warranty
take to dealer for possible no charge repairs.
