I am thinking that another easier program might do just as well for your project. Yes, photoshop is the best, its also the most expensive and has a very steep learning curve.

If you can afford $100, try adobe elements, Paintshop pro or Photo Impact, the latter is probably the most user friendly.

The programs linked below are all totally free! Try a couple of them, and you will probably be able to achieve what you want to. There are online instructions/tutorials for each, just do a search.

You can download a trial version from the Adobe website. The only kicker being that it expires after 30 days. The purchase price for the FULL version is around $500 - $600 but Adobe also makes a "lighter" version called Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements 4.0 contains about 65% of the functionality of Adobe Photoshop CS2 at about 1/5th the price, $99 at most electronic retailers [Best Buy, Circuit City] or online at Adobe.

For instructions/tutorials try the links below -

If you only need it briefly, try the trial version from Adobe.com.

If you need a copy of it for yourself, take a look at Adobe Photoshop Elements- it has almost all of the same features for only about $100.

Try browsing the internet for tutorials. http://pixelfx.org/ and http://www.satinskies.net have some pretty helpful ones.
