this communist state have tortured over 40000 people.[Documented by the United Nations] Experts say that over 10 thousand have died during torture. Their organs then sold for use in transplants, This is a Country that we in England are trading with more and more. Surely there must come a time where morality overcomes profit, but then again money rules the mind when it comes to the West. Evidence is forthcoming that followers of Falon Gong [a practice of "slow moving meditative exercises"] are being imprisoned, tortured, and murdered for their organs. There are over 100,000000 practioners in China, and all of them are now at risk. I think it is about time severe pressure was put on China to improve their human rights record.

Doomer, I agree with you, the figures I quoted were published by the UN and you know how conservative they can be.

Hey I'm with you all the way. Let me just correct something... your numbers. They are way under the truth. Add 3 more "0" to the 40,000 and that would be more realistic!
The Communists in China are responsible for an estimated 60 million deaths! I kid you not! I've read the 2 books below and thats what the numbers give the average as.
That makes the West's trading with them so much worse. I don't ever buy anything Made in China if i can help it but their products are everywhere.

What you're saying is absolutely right, however, morality has a very minor role today, and even less in politics. Whilst China is still Communist, it is opening itself up to Capitalism and already a large number of large companies are setting-up shop over there because it's cheaper, and because they know that in about 10 years time China is going to be an absolutely massive world player. Add to this the fact that it's clear that China is a Super Power, and you lose any chance of pressure being applied. The big countries only become moralistic when faced with smaller, weaker nations who they can bully. For pressure to be put on China, every one of the nations would have to agree, and that won't happen, because we don't all get along. Everybody knows that China is going to be huge and countries and multi-nationals are going to make lots of maney from her, therefore the last thing they want to do is get on her bad side! And any government which tried to take the moralistic approach would immediately feel the intense pressure of big business breathing down their necks. No Western government can afford to isolate the large corporations because who finances their election campaigns? The world is a very cynical place, and money has led to a wholesale corruption of morals and ideals. The shame of it is that I can't see it getting better in the future. We had the possibility of a future following either Thomas More's Utopia or George Orwell's 1984, and I think that George gets the prize.

Trade will continue because a totalitarian regime is easier to do business with. Look at the rest of the world and all the "developing democracies", another phrase for dictatorships. We trade with them all, even Burma.
I'm sorry to be cynical, and you are quite right to be highlighting the human-rights abuses that are taking place, but China has changes from being a Maoist-communist state to being a corporate fascist state. The communist party saw which way the globalisation tide was flowing, and instead of resisting it, swam with it.
As far as the vast bulk of the population is concerned, a difference that makes no difference is no difference. Still the same old oppression, just instead of making steel in your back yard, or killing sparrows, its working in a sweat shop or a scrap yard instead. For the greater glory of the party and their new friends from the West.

You appear to be advocating trade sanctions against China. Without addressing the specific reasons why you seek such a course of action, China's economic power has now become such that it is impossible.
The migration of manufacturing industry to the Far East generally raises serious issues about the need for nations to have a reasonably balanced economy. I suspect it is the West that needs to learn from China in this respect.
Perhaps the most serious issue upon which the UK and other Western countries have to co-operate with China in addressing problems is that of environmental sustainability. The billion people in China are entitled to have enough to eat and reasonable living standards, but this is, as the Chinese themselves know only too well, creating enormous environmental pollution. Unless these problems are addressed very urgently the whole world could become uninhabitable. The situation with India is similar. What good are human rights if we are all dead?
I don't like the idea of torture or of religious persecution either. I am not Chinese and my values are not Chinese. But they will not stand for us dictating our morals to them and we are not in a position to do so.

We could not put any pressure on them whatsoever if we were not trading with them. Their abuse of human rights is not going to stop overnight by isolating them, in fact, that would probably make it worse given the immediate economic effect. The granting of the 2012 Olympics will hopefully be a starting point in a gradual change in the human rights situation.

You have a point. But our industry, our machinery is all rusted, our workers all fired or retired and gone on to the dole.
China has bought the US national debt; American companies have built their new factories there. America is wedded to China for good or ill and now can do nothing politically or diplomatically or economically: it is totally dependent upon China.
You will never again hear the words "yellow peril". More's the pity.

this is the ultimate downfall of our capitalist system. we love money and profit. buy cheap imports and sell them for a nice mark up.
if there was no profit in it we wouldn't do it and there would be more of an uproar about their whole crummy system. don't forget there are plenty of corrupt governments out there who have as bad if not worse human right records who get glossed over due to having some nice black gold reserves
