Does anyone know of a good site where free online games can be played by two people on different networks. Similar to Yahoo Games but more variety. Would like to play Monopoly, Scrabble Trivail Pursuits or any game with my partner who is online the North Sea

Check out bzflag. You can run your own server (it's built right in), so no need to have accounts anywhere, and really it's the most fun you can have in an online game.
There are also some public servers for Monopoly-like games, look for things that support monopd
