depends, 323 will give you better fuel economy because of the smaller engine, but the 328 will give slightly better performance numbers. As far as features are concerned, the 328 came with more standard, but if the 323 could have just as many, even more features as the 328 depending on how it was equipped.

The BMW 3 Series line has improved dramatically since 2 years ago. Your question is unanswerable as is. It all depends on your budjet and what you want from your car. Obviously the 328 will be more powerful stock from the factory while they both are very similar in features and room. There are so many ways to mod whatever BMW you buy, i'd ask myself what type of roads and trips i'll be most likely using the car for. If you're the guy that takes off from the light cause he likes his traffic behind him, then get the 328. If you're the family guy who doesn't want to scare the wife and kids, you're probably gonna be happier with the 323. Long trips fuel economy is better. Short hops around town to and from work and fighting traffic, you may consider more power for the quick "getaway". Either way you'll be happy with your ultimate choice.

The 328 is faster and fuel economy won't be that much worse than a 323 so it would be my choice.
I had a 328 and i loved it. plenty of power, great handling but nice and relaxing when you want it to be.
Don't buy a Merc, they're about as much fun as taking a sedative...

Get the E36 328is, year specific 1997. Make sure you buy at around 68,000 miles. Make sure you get the full maintenance and service records. Then when your car reaches 88,000 miles be prepared to spend about $2000 in service and upgrades. If you play your cards right you will get a great car that can last to about 200,000 miles for around $10,000 (including 88,000 mile preventive maintenance.) This car is extremely fun to drive and can be upgraded easily. A new chip from dinan, and a new set of rubber can make this car extremely fun. I would suggest going to the Bimmer magazine web site - just google bimmer mag to find it. Then I would order the back issue with the E36 buyers guide in it. This will give you all the information you will need to choose the best E36 for you. Good Luck!
