I work for Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn Mich. I don't see how elimnating Cadillac and Buick would do anything to help GM. Just as eliminating Lincoln and Mercury studies show will not help Ford. Limiting their production output on the other hand is the key. But, then you're talking about eliminating more jobs. What we need to do is to keep more plants right here in the United States. As, far as recalls are concerned, many more foriegn built vehicles are recalled than U.S. built vehicles. But, they're "silent recalls." In other words they pay to keep them out of the news media. You have to remember also, out of work auto workers has a devastating domino effect on this entire country. It may not be immediate, but in the near future, virtually every persons income is affected. And by the way, contrary to popular belief, GM'S problems are not because of their large amounts of retirees. Those benefits are paid for by the employee while he/she is still working. And supposedly, are in a separate fund. The problem is, companies use those funds for other investments. And our government allows them to do it. Then when it comes time to retire the worker is made to pay for benefits that they have already paid for. Benefits for workers spouse's is not free either. They are paid for out of the retirees pension.

Well, they already axed Oldsmobile. As long as those brands sell and have a following, which I think they both do, there will be a Caddy and a Buick.
Most of GM's current problems lie in retirement benefits for its extremely large retired work force. Although they are losing short term due to their investment in SUV "gas guzzlers" they have adapted to that fairly quickly and are pushing their more efficent stuff.
There are still plenty of GM's sold worldwide: there's just a smaller workforce that has to support a very large retired workforce! To do this they must be "lean and mean!"
If one went, I think it would be Buick: or Pontiac. Both brands are quite similar to cars Chevy makes. Many are identical to a Chevy except for grille and taillights.
Caddys, with a few exceptions (Sienna), are unique.
I would think Chevy would be the last to go and Cadillac possibly even next to last!

As a Michigander who has experienced Michigan's terrible economy, I would say no. GM makes a lot of money on Cadillacs because they cost so much and Buicks are just great cars, that seem to be diverting into a large demographic (lamens: They are getting more sporty, therefore younger people are buying them). I think Michigan needs more attractions rather than to sell out it leading money maker.
