You risk putting yourself in a disagreeable position based on your views and always ends up in an argument. Yet, people persist. Why? Are they just stupid?

Disagreeable positions are always going to be adopted - not everyone will find you or any opinion you hold, even on a subject you may think most 'innocent', inoffensive. Do you think avoiding everything but the weather will keep you from being disliked? Have you a fear of being seen as 'wrong' or do you badly need to be approved of? If you try to pease everyone, you'll never please anyone, least of all yourself. And as for religion and politics, these need to be discussed. They are two prime forces behind misogynism in the world today and anyone who is going to sit on a fence will get metaphoric 'spikes' up their backside! People persist in discussing these topics because they have great impact on our world and carry much emotion with them. They're not stupid in discussing controversial topics but smart. If topics that are potentially divisive do not get discussed, we end up with fascist dictatorships. Aka the Hitler and Communist Regimes...People offend others everyday just by their existence, let alone their personal opinions. Why should you care that your opinion may be "disagreeable" to another person? Plenty of people won't care at all if they find you and your view/s - or seeming lack of any - "disagreeable"...

I wonder if silence or group-think are any more appropriate??? Politics and religion are an expression of our individual perspectives. People tend to become offended whenever their viewpoints are challenged. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing. It only becomes a problem when people try to prove themselves right and expect the other person to agree. Your point should be able to stand alone. Besides, it's about how you say what you say and when you say it.

I think the keyword in your question/statement is "discuss". A discussion is a two-way exchange of ideas and/or beliefs not a soapbox tirade. Only immature, uninformed (or stupid) people don't know the difference. A discussion can be a very exciting exchange between two or more informed, educated people who have valid ideas to share. Open your mind. Also, if you keep your thoughts to yourself for fear of "offending" others how can you help them grow? Perhaps you should sit in on a real discussion sometime. Mature people don't argue, they listen and learn.

Discussing religion and politics isn't really the problem. The problem is when people can't agree to disagree.

To avoid religion and politics in conversation, is to have a meaningless conversation.
