I know one trick for getting rid of smell and it is this:
if it is because the place is a little damp, try puttling newpaper on the walls and upholstry. Scrunch it up into balls then flatten it out roughly - it works better.
I don't know about lime but the paper will become damp from the water then you can just change it.
It also works on shoes - drys them out in a couple of hours.
Good luck - you may need to just vent the room out a bit.

The first step is to get rid of the water source. Anything you do to rid the smell will not work long term unless you alleviate the source of the problem.

If there is mold growth, I would look into abatement (removal of the mold). I know little about this, so I cannot help.

A better option than lime is to use charcoal. It works vvery very well to absorbe odors. Hoem Depot/Lowes carry a product (forget the name) that comes in a bucket. You simply sit in the basement and it will absorb odors. Similar to how Baking Powder works in the fridge.

Remember, correct the problem, not conceal it.

If the smell is actually mold or mildew, cover ups like lime are inadequate . . . I would recommend finding someone who does the house tenting and an ozone gassing. It reportedly worked well for the Katrina buildings they did.

you might want to check for mold in your basement ,if it was wet

I had a smell in my garage from dampness, and I hung charcoal briquettes in nylon stockings in many areas and that really made the air smell fresh as long as the dampness is gone. They are cheap, non toxic and easy to use.............hope this helps........................

I would buy a dehumidifier baby and let it run for 2 weeks - it will dry everything out down there.
