I consider it an amazing data storage medium. Not only does it encode physical properties, but it also somehow encodes instinct. We don't even understand how it works, and probably won't for decades to come.

In my class, I learned that DNA only contains the information, sort of like a hard drive if you will, and cannot function or perform actions other than carry instructions for passing down heritable traits and making polypeptides or RNAs, etc.

no. DNA does no computing at all. Neurons do, but they're very slow. What makes the brain reasonably fast is that it has lots of neurons working in parallel.
Nonetheless, a 286 is faster at floating point calculations than the brain.
