First try the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Chuck Berry. Berry was among the frist to actually write his own songs (unlike the pretender to the throne of king, Elvis Presley, who wasn't a writer). Also: Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, the Coasters. This just scratches the surface.
In the sixties, anything by the American Shakespear, Bob Dylan. Plus the Stones, Buffalo Springfield, Four Tops, the Doors, Eric Burden and the Animals, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Donovan Leitch, among so many others.

It was all good, Molly. I'm surprised you mentioned Paul & Paula.
I have their Christmas Album. I liked Johnny Tillotson, Neil Diamond, Three Dog Night, & Buffalo Springfield to name a few.
