Express both of those numbers as fractions, two-thirds as 2/3 and 4 and a half as 9/2 (4 = 8/2 plus 1/2 = 9/2) and multiply the two... the numerators by the denonimators, so 2*9=18 and 3*2=6 which means the answer is 18/6 or 3

So it's asking what's two-thirds of 4 and a half? (4.5 = 9/2)
so we got 2/3 * 9/2 = (2*9) / (3*2) = 18 / 6 = 3
so that's 3 km

When you are doing word problems it helps to have the rules of the words used. When the problem says "2/3 of 4.5km" the "of" is the same as multiplying. So the problem is "2/3 times 4.5km" when you do the math it comes out to be 3 km.
I hope that wasn't confusing...

the answer is quite simple if the total is 4 and a half kilometers and you have walked two-thirds of it you need to know what is two-thirds of four and a half.
so
2/3 x 4.5 = 3
