To stand firm in your convictions and take the morally right approach regardless of personal cost.

Courage comes at all levels. Soldiers certainly are courageous, but so is the middle-school child who stands up for someone being bullied. So is the father who donates a kidney to save his son - or someone he doesn't know, and the co-worker who risks ridicule to either stand up for a good idea or protect someone unfairly blamed. Courage comes in so many flavors. It would be hard to say what is more or less courageous because each act is important.

The ability to face your fears. I would say that someone who has a fear of travelling is courageous when they venture forth everyday to go to their job, for example. Fear is a fight or flight reaction to perceived danger with an adrennalin kick back. To know courage, you must understand fear and how to deal with it in a personal way.
