have been on safari in kenya 3 times, its excellent. a six year old would love it! i've been in july, in august and in march. if you want the weather to be hot march is the best, if not, july is more cool and easier on a kid i'm sure. nakuru national park is excellent and if you look up kembu campsite on the internet you'll find a great place near nakuru park with lovely lodges and guesthouses which are a lot better value than a lot of the tourist hotels. contact me if you need more info.

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya, not a particularly interesting town to visit, especially with a 6 year old!
If you want a good safari then I would suggest the Serengetti, it is great to see all the animals and your 6 year old will also enjoy it. Before you go, read up on some of the animals and get the "Lonely Planet guide to Kenya" should give you lots of useful info not only on safaris but of other facts about Kenya. I would suggest a visit to the beaches as your 6 yr old would love to play in the white beach and warm sea, I am sure.
Just some friendly advise: Security is not the best in Kenya, lots of very poor locals, unemployed, so do not flash expensive jewelery, valuables, money, cameras, etc. around both it is not really fair on them, but it would be easy pickings for them and a big temptation. Keep your valuables descreet and get as much info from your tour guide as possible. Take as little valuables as possible, obviously you will take a camera or 2 which is naturally a MUST to capture the beautiful scenery and animals.
I am not trying to put you off, quite the opposite, it is a great country and well worth a visit. Wildlife safaris are amasing and a real adventure. I have known people whom when they were robbed said that they were not warned so were not prepared. As long as you are prepared and have the knowledge and sensibility you will have a fantastic time there.
As I said, I would recommend the Serengetti for your ultimate safari, failing this then either the Masai Mara or Tsavo, but 1st choice would be Serengetti.
Safari Njema "Safe trip" as the Kenyans say. Have a lot of fun and enjoy.

ive been on safari a couple of times in kenya, and also in south africa... we went to tsavo national park most recently (in august 04), and there you can stay in luxury tents right next to an elephant watering hole, so when you wake up in the morning, and step out of your tent, there are elephants taking their morning drink and bath! it was amazing... i think you son would love that... so tsavo is a good place for the ellies. i saw the big cats when i went to kruger national park in south africa (july 02), but saw lions and a leopard at masai mara national park a few years back( july 00)... i have family in kenya, so whenever i go and visit i make a point of going on safari... its so worth it cos you drive for hours seeing nothing, then when you do, david attenborough eat your heart out!
we booked when we got out there, so go to a couple of travel agents when you get there and you can shop around, and dont be scared to haggle for a good deal! nairobi has got a bad rep lately, only because its become quite scary with loads of robberies recently due to the economics there. but mombasa is beautiful, not far from the national parks, you wont find better beaches and i think you get a real feel for africa if you are not afraid of venturing out a bit. if you get a chance to get to nairobi, i recommend the giraffe sanctury cos there you climb and stand on a platform, so you are the same level as the heads of the giraffes, and you can feed them as well, cos they come really close and you can stroke them! i love giraffes, so that was pretty special.
whatever you decide, kenya is an amazing place, ive been loads of times, and each time i leave i want to go back. have a great trip.

Like Anne Marie, I also went to the Masai Mara and loved it. We stayed at the Sun'n'sand hotel in Mombasa which was great. We did the two day safari and stayed at the Masai Lodge which was awesome. Our tent overlooked the hippo pool.
I am not sure about taking a kiddie there. Virtually everyone had a tummy upset but it didn't stop the enjoyment.

Masai Mara in Kenya is stunning - just like the filem Out of Africa. If you combine your holiday with one week safari and one week in a beach resort like Mombasa, you'll get the best of both worlds...worthwhile pricing around....and just one thing, to really see the animals in the safari - you're up and about at dawn (5am) and dusk near watering holes, so be sure you're 6 year old is up to that....at 6 years old it might be a little early to appreciate it
