It won't help. Torre is a good manager but he was blessed with Watson and Cushman digging up quite a few good players for him to fill in where the farm club had done an excellent job. Think about it. The Yankees core during the dynasty were guys like Jeter, Williams, Pettite and Rivera. All guys that came up from the farm system. Soriano, Cano and many more. Then a few astute trades a couple key free agents and the team was built. Torre gave the team it's low key fight till the end style. Helped guys like O'Niell find thier stride. That was all it took.

The Cubs need new players.
Jacque Jones is a filler at best. He is clearly in decline despite being only 31.

Wood and Prior are great the few days you can keep them healthy. You can't base a pitching staff on that. Odds are these guys are never going to be healthy. That leaves Zambrano and the 3 dwarfs for the starting staff.

Derek Lee, the Cubs should have unloaded him one day after his "breakout" year. They could have gotten a good pitcher for Lee. Look at his career stats. The guy has wandered around and not fullfilled his promise year after year. He has a worse home/away split than many Rockies players. The guy is 31 years old and it was not until he was 30 that he had his one good year. Sure it was a really good year. That's not a break out year. That is either juicing or it's a fluke.

With Pierre, Murton and Theriot they are taking steps in the right direction. Ramierez anchors the team and is still young. Z is young and can anchor the staff but he can't do it by himself. Cedeno is so far an offensive void but he's young and if he has a wicked glove he's more valuable than 3 shortstops that can hit. Barret can hit but he's a defensive liability. He's also proven that he is miserable when playing another posisition. If the cubs can put together a great pitching staff then Barrett is not so much of a liability, especially if they combine really good defense behind him. If they cannot Barretts inability to stop the run is lethal to the team.

So a manager isn't going to do all that much. The Cubs need to do some addition by subtraction first. Most importantly they need pitching. Then they need a closer. Dempster was a failed experiment. His 3.13 ERA last year was a big warning sign. 83 hits in 92 innings last year and 77 hits in 72 innings this year. That is WAY too many men on base for a closer. Dempster walks way too many hitters as well. Rivera by contrast gave up 11 walks in 75 innings. Hoffman 13 in 63 innings. Closers can't put people on base.

The team needs better defense. They ranked 22 in the majors in fielding percentage. Cub's catchers had the 9th most Passed balls in the game. Yet none of the cubs are throwing things like Knuckballs or really wicked breaking balls. No team in baseball had fewer assists than the Cubs in 06. The Cubs need a major defensive improvement.

I'm not saying Joe Torre is a bad manager, but his strong suit seems to be getting great players to play well together. You could say he is the Phil Jackson of baseball. If you look at Torre's managerial history, he had very little success with the Mets, Braves or Cardinals before he got to the Yankees. The Cubbies don't need a Phil Jackson type, they need a Larry Brown type: (Larry Bowa, Lou Pinella, Joe Girardi) someone who is going to get in their face and force them to become better.

i'm a yankees and continually were from again to 1983 even as i develop into 5 yrs, yet actually Torre has performed wonders for this orginizations because the yankees particular werent a international sequence contending crew earlier '96. He has taken the Yankees to 4 international sequence and to the playoffs each and every twelve months throughout his time with the Yankees. definite, we havent been to the international sequence in a lengthy time period and human beings snigger in our faces, yet actually making it to the international sequence again and again shows that there is the potential to at it again. regrettably, the bats of the Yankees were silent antagonistic to the Indians except for in interest 3, even with the indisputable fact that the previous playoff appearances that hasnt taken us to the international sequence.......properly, the bats of the Yankees havent truly produced. For some reason, after the red Sox beat the Yankees in interest 7 of the ACLS, the yankees look to have lost their postseason fireplace. yet Torre has performed more suitable than maximum managers with the Yankees in the previous two decades has, yet George S. is an proprietor who expects no longer some thing lower than perfection no count number if he pays you $250 million or a $a million. even as human beings positioned a fee ticket on Torre's perfomance particularly George S., i imagine Torre had relaxing which baseball should be and he dealt with his gamers with recognize. I dont imagine the owner envisioned the yankees gamers to be so supportive of Torre. i imagine George positioned his foot in his mouth in this one because if he shall we Torre bypass and brings in some different person and they do no longer carry out as anticipate then there'll be fairly some indignant Yankee followers. i like the crew, its managers, and gamers, even with the indisputable fact that the owner has no heart even as it contains his crew.

No, I think Joe Torre would fit better in San Francisco or Texas.

Sure, but probably won't make a difference. Cub's fans are not about winning. Rather they are about the history and festivities available around Wrigley Field.

No, they should try to sign Joe Girardi first. I have no idea why the Marlins let him go.
