It's hard for me to choose a best album by bowie, so i'm giving you three that were released one after another, so I guess I'm telling you my favorite era of Bowie's.
Station to Station>Low>Heroes
I think those three albums are not only his best, most experimental albums, but they also insipred alot of the music that came after them (the talking heads for instance). plus, those three albums have never sounded dated, or have lost their appeal to me, unlike some of his earlier albums.

Today I think it's Diamond Dogs
Because it shows range of writing and rock is one of my fave. styles
But tomorrow I might say Changes or Aladdin Sane or Ziggy Stardust or Low or Space Oddity.
That's a bit like asking which is Pink Floyd's best album really isn't it?
Let's just say , whatever your mood or preferred music style , there's probably a Bowie album out there you'll like.
( Though I can easily live without China girl,Red Shoes et al.)
Not so keen on the compilations as although they may cover a lot of ground everything is out of context- though I'm inexplicably fond of a German L.P. I had which included "The Laughing Gnome" and "The Little Bombadier"
and Tin Machine's rendition of "Show me the way to the next Whisky bar."
Sorry, got a bit off the point there. Good Luck with getting this question answered, clearly I'm incapable of making a decision on this!!!!!!!!

Aladdin Sane is my current favourite. Mainly because of Jean Genie.
The definitive collection though? Probably best to get one of the singles collections, for the breadth. I'd consider Changes One and Two 'definitive' if he hadn't inconveniently carried on making great music long after they were released!

Hunky Dory really is mind blowingly fantastic.
Personally, I'm a fan of the first Tin Machine album which was release just pre-Nirvana and was, in retrospect, a very cool bridge to grunge while throwing back to cool garage rock.

Although not a "definitive" collection, my favourite album was Low because it was more experimental than most of his work. Also, Heroes comes a close second, he did some excellent collaborative work with Brian Eno on the second half of the album.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is probably the best album, because he reinvented himself into another persona, and it was different from what he was doing previously.
