Red? (was this a trick question?)
Lots depend on the color red you are using. Many reds (like Ford or Honda three stage reds) are very prone to 'bleed' the undercoat through the color coat. Since red is so very expensive I would suggest you contact your local automotive paint supplier and get their recommendation. I would hate to shoot four hundred dollars of red paint and have it turn pink because I used the incorrect primer.

Lighter colors I would use a white primer or a light gray, White would be best as the red will cover the white easily. and also make it a brighter end result, Remeber your base coat or Primer DOES impact your end result. more paint has to be used to cover the primer effectively

Since the primer won't show anyway, whatever you'd like.
