Looking at things as being other than what they really are is not freedom, but bondage. Having a distorted view of the world is escapism and does not help you deal with the real problems that inevitably confront you. People who insist upon looking at the world through rose colored glasses are destined to end up schizophrenic---unable to tell reality from fantasy. Looking at the world and people as it and they are is protecting your sanity, not losing it.

A distorted reality is a necessity to temporarily feel free but not actually be free. True reality will inevitably haunt you with your issues until you face them. A distorted reality is a method to help you cope with your issues until you're ready to face them. In some cases it is not personal issues, but the characteristics of today's world is rather overwhelming to some people.
The only way to actually be free with a distorted reality in mind is to actually create that distortion into reality. Depending on the situation, it can be done.

True freedom only exists when you are capable of looking at things as they really are. They might scare you, but you're free, so you can look away. You have the freedom to not have to deal with them. You know they're there, but you are free to not react to them. Scary is relative. If the way things really are is scary, then think of an even-worse scenario, and then it's rally not so scary compared to how it could be. Freedom IS reality-and reality IS freedom.

Or even yourself.
I don't think it's a necessity, but definitely an option.
I personally don't believe in freedom, so ...whatever...
